THE measure of a good song, no, a great song, is its ability to be covered in a variety of genres while keeping its integrity absolutely intact.

Yet the furore over the use of The Smiths' Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want in a John Lewis Christmas television campaign ignited calls of scandal, sacrilege and worse.

Following the likes of The Dream Academy, Muse, The Deftones and the controversial Slowly Moving Millie cover, Sarah Darling is the 27th act to release a commercial version of the Johnny Marr and Morrissey anthem.

Darling is an upwardly mobile country act, known to American audiences via television talent shows E! The Entertainer and ABC’s Rising Star. She does a very credible, mannered interpretation of Please, Please, Please…, which is, of course, the standout track on this handsomely packaged British debut, but fifth US collection from the Nashville artist.

Also worth checking out are Darling’s own compositions Halley’s Comet and You Take Me All The Way and the wickedly delicious Tell That Devil.
