IN the spirit of Christmas, What's On has two albums of winter music to be won for the festive celebrations.

Firstly, The York Waits have provided The Press with no fewer than ten copies of their latest Christmas record, recorded with singer Deborah Catterall, Crions Nouel, Music for the Christmas season from the chapels, halls, taverns and streets of renaissance Europe, on the Huntsup Records label.

Secondly, courtesy of BMG, three CDs of Katie Melua's In Winter are up for Christmas grabs. For her seventh studio set, Melua returned to her Georgian roots to make a winter-themed album that "would fill the house with wonderful, warm, poignant sounds, rather than the usual jingle-bells pop songs that tend to hit the airwaves during this time of year".

To do so, she sang with the 24 voices of the Gori Women's Choir, recording the likes of Joni Mitchell's River, Melua's own Perfect World, Plane Song and A Time To Buy, Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil - Nunc Dimittis, O Holy Night and The Little Swallow (Shchedryk), a traditional Ukrainian carol performed in its native tongue.
