ROLL up, roll up for a medieval musical mystery tour presented by the Ebor Singers in the Chapter House of York Minster on October 22.

"Following on from the stunning 2016 Mystery Plays staged in York Minster, we'll be exploring music from the time of the original Mystery Plays next Saturday," says Paul Gameson, the York choir's musical director.

"Medieval York was a major centre of culture and learning, and the concert will trace a path through three centuries of the city’s history, moving from music for the 14th century cycle of Mystery Plays, through to a late-15th century mass, from the time of the Wars of Roses, that was almost lost during the Reformation, and a 16th century mass by John Taverner honouring St William of York."

Music by Gavin Bryars, Philip Moore and Ben Rowarth will provide contemporary reflections on York’s history in the 7.30pm concert. "The music provides snapshots of life in York during a highpoint in its history," says Paul. "York was a significant religious centre with many monasteries, as well as the Minster, where there was a shrine to St William, and of course the Mystery Plays, and our programme includes scared music from this period."

In addition the Ebor Singers will sing music that gives an insight into specific events, such as a piece written during the plague of the 1530s and a Philip Moore work commemorating the 500th anniversary of the end of the Wars of the Roses.

"To be able to perform this music in the Chapter House, which itself predates the first Mystery Plays by over one hundred years, is very special," says Paul. "Indeed, this is a rare opportunity to listen as the Minster rings with music first heard in the building more than 500 years ago and rarely performed since."

Tickets for Mystery and Miracle cost £12, concessions £10, students £5, on 01904 623568 or on the door.
