THE first UK country act to go straight to number one in the album charts is recognition that these Hampshire twins are on to something.

Following the breakout success of their debut, America is taking Ward Thomas to its cold, cold heart. No mean feat.

Singing in a smooth, Nashville-friendly style (where the album was made), but avoiding the twang and pedal steel that puts so many people off country music, Ward Thomas aim squarely for the Taylor Swift marketplace.

While the production team have worked hard to buff the material into full shine, it actually weakens Cartwheels since the sound ends up lacking variety.

Many revered songwriters fail to produce something with universal appeal, but 22-year-old twins Catherine and Lizzy have done just that with the title track, a song of desperately trying to connect with someone who doesn’t want to know anymore.

Boomerang returns to the same theme on a record that will have music’s money men turning cartwheels but better yet will surely come.
