HANNAH Sanders and Ben Savage will bring their Before The Sun autumn tour to the Black Swan Folk Club, Peasholme Green, York, on September 22.

The duo will perform their set around a single vintage microphone to provide an intimate warm experience. "We would love for people to leave our shows feeling uplifted," says English folk singer Hannah. " We've been told that we're a duo who look and sound classically timeless, yet feel refreshingly unique."

Fleetingly, they may evoke a memory of Shirley Collins and Davy Graham from the 1960s, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris from the Seventies and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings from the Nineties, but their distilling of influences from both sides of the Big Pond elicits a sound that is decidedly their own.

Dobro player, guitarist and singer Savage produced Sanders' debut album Charms Against Sorrow, and when they toured together they spent many an hour jamming. Before The Sun's set of duets was duly born. “The songs for the new album were ones we are familiar with and grown in us. Lots of Trad, from both sides of the pond," says Hannah, who plays dulcimer and guitar.

Sanders and Savage worked with producer David Travers-Smith in Toronto on the album, which features cameos from Jim Causley, Lamb double bassist Jon Thorne, Katriona Gilmore, of Gilmore & Roberts, and Kevin Breit, who has worked previously with Norah Jones and Rosanne Cash.

"There are a couple of covers and thanks to Ben’s coaxing we have a couple of self-penned songs too," says Hannah. "Our intention all along was simply to be a part of a revival of the duet singing that we love so much. It's always been a mainstay of folk music.”
