CHAMBER Opera Chicago will perform its original musical adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, on July 22 as part of an English and Scottish summer tour.

The 2016 production by the not-for-profit opera company will be touring with 40 singers, dancers and orchestra members, presenting performances in Aberdeen, Stirling, York, Stratford upon Avon, London and Lyme Regis from July 16-30.

Persuasion, which has toured multiple British and American cities over the past four years, is the story of a woman who has lost at love but gains a second chance.

Anne Elliot has rejected a proposal of marriage from the one man she truly loved, Captain Frederick Wentworth. She was persuaded by her godmother Captain Wentworth was unworthy, but after a separation of almost a decade, he returns from sea with both rank and fortune. Anne is nearly an old maid and her once rich family faces bankruptcy. Can Anne win him back? Can he forgive her? Can their lost love be rekindled?.

The fully-staged musical drama combines Barbara Landis’s adaptation with Austen’s favourite music on Celtic and period instruments; luxurious authentic costumes; rousing sailor songs; world-champion Irish dancers from the Trinity Irish Dance Company and scenery projections to show changes in location, time and weather.
