SIR Tom Jones's summer concert tour, including Castle Howard, near York, on July 16, will go ahead as planned.

The death of his wife of 59 years, Linda, on April 10 had led to media speculation that the 75-year-old Welshman would quit performing, but Sir Tom has taken to social media to confirm the show must go on.

Writing on his Facebook page and Twitter feed, he said: "Seeing some unexpected press over the weekend, I came to the conclusion that singing really is my best therapy. Music is so important to me – it's my life, and through the brightest and darkest of times it has embedded a soundtrack to all my memories.

"So, it means a huge amount to be able to continue to perform for such a loyal and giving audience; your support has been uplifting and doesn't go unnoticed. See you all at the shows this summer."

Rachel Underwood, Castle Howard's marketing manager, said: "Sir Tom is one of the few musical artists whose profession began at the dawn of modern popular music who continues to have a vital recording and performing career to this day. Sir Tom has always been about the power of the song, the power of the voice."
