INTERNATIONAL trumpet player Alison Balsom is the guest soloist for Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet in Eb in the final concert of York Guildhall Orchestra's 2015-2016 season this weekend.

The 7.30pm programme also features Rossini's Overture La Scala di Seta (The Silken Ladder), Bizet's Carmen Suite, Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, orchestrated by Stokowski, and Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, orchestrated by Ravel.

Alison Balsom, from Royston, was the 2013 Gramophone Artist of the Year and is a three- time winner of both the Classic BRITs and Echo Klassik Awards. She made her American television debut on The Late Show With David Letterman; headlined the Last Night of the Proms in 2009 with a global television audiences of 200 million people; and was featured in 2013 in her own South Bank Show for Sky Arts, also winning a Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Award alongside Barry Gibb, Coldplay and Labrinth.

Balsom has presented the BBC Young Musician competition, played at the Latitude Festival, given her first solo show, The Trumpet Sings, at the Royal Albert Hall and performed with such conductors as Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, Sir Roger Norrington, Paavo Jaavi and Trevor Pinnock.

She has played with the London Philharmonic; L'Orchestre de Paris; Los Angeles Philharmonic; San Francisco Symphony; Orchestre de Paris; Philharmonia Orchestra; Toronto Symphony; Wiener Symphoniker; Hong Kong Philharmonic; NHK Symphony; BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, BBC NOW and BBC Scottish Orchestras and Philadelphia Orchestras.To that esteemed list now add York Guildhall Orchestra in their 36th season.

Balsom is increasingly active in commissioning new works for trumpet, performing Bramwell Tovey's Songs Of The Paradise Saloon with the Toronto Symphony, and giving the world premieres of two trumpet concertos, Qigang Chen's Joie Eternelle and Guy Barker's The Lanterne of Light, at the BBC Proms. Last October, she was the castaway on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Disc.

Now 37, Balsom will release Légende, her first recital album with piano, recorded live in concert with her long-standing chamber music partner Tom Poster, tomorrow on Warner Classics.
