FOLK big band Bellowhead play their last ever Yorkshire concert at a sold-out Sheffield City Hall on April 21.

The disbanding of "the best live band we have; no contest” (to quote fRoots magazine) is being accompanied by the April 8 release of Bellowhead Live: The Farewell Tour on Navigator Navigator Records. This deluxe double CD and DVD compilation features 52 tracks recorded during the first of the 11-piece band’s two farewell tours in November 2015, along with a 24-page booklet with colour photos.

The CDs combine 29 tracks from Bellowhead's autumn travels that included Harrogate International Centre; the DVD features the full concert from Leicester’s De Montford Hall on November 19.

Formed in Oxford in 2004 by Jon Boden, John Spiers and plenty more besides, the band scarcely imagined that one day they would be headlining British and international festivals and selling out tours of major concert halls.

Or that they would sell in excess of 250,000 albums, not least the highest-selling independently released traditional album of all time, Hedonism on Navigator Records in 2010, and the highest-charting independently released British folk album of all time, Broadside on Navigator Records in 2012. Their last studio record, 2014's Revival, entered the British album charts at number 12.

Early in 2015, lead singer Jon Boden decided to step down from the band and the rest of Bellowhead felt they didn’t want to continue without him. “The shows always finish on a high, and so should we,” they announced.

Win the CD/DVD Courtesy of Navigator Records, What's On has three Bellowhead Live: The Farewell Tour CD/DVDs to be won.
