LUKAS Graham’s 7 Years is easily the biggest-selling single of the year to date. The quirky story of growing up, friendship, loss and combatting loneliness instantly chimed with audiences of several generations.
Its strangeness indicated that Lukas Graham should be a one-hit wonder act. Far from it. Blue Album is a totally endearing, instantly likeable and engaging set of wistful story songs.
The Danish soul act write in impeccable English, but with an ever so slight twist, rendering their poems even more engaging. Lukas Graham, for they are a band, will irritate some, but they are following a successful template set by Leo Sayer.
Mama Said will be the follow-up single, but expect Happy Home and Better Than Yourself (Criminal Mind), based on Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, to follow suit. Many of the stories share a theme and are consistent with each other; this indicates a real tangible truth in the lyrics, or as Strip No More and Funeral would indicate, a future in musical theatre .
