THE thing about the debut album from Coasts, is that it has the confidence of a band three or four albums into their career.

Each track is bursting with energy and a poppy bounce which doesn't feel contrived or childish, itself a refreshing touch.

The chorus of Modern Love will probably become the soundtrack to many a sporting montage or energy drink advert, while album opener Oceans begins with a low-key dance feel before becoming more upbeat, as if Futureheads collaborated with Calvin Harris for their most commercial project yet.

When it's good, it's very good, with songs and choruses intricately designed to inspire cheers and lighters in the air - see for example A Rush of Blood, which has the built-in pauses ahead of pounding and uplifting synths for maximum impact.

Late track Your Soul features a strange effect on its intro, which makes the Vampire Weekend-esque instrumental sound like it's wobbling out of tune, but by the time a Bastille-like drum beat welcomes the chorus, you're back caught up in the moment and nodding along.

In honesty, it runs out of steam from time to time, but considering the enthusiasm and talent on show, it's forgiveable in the knowledge there's probably even better to come.
