RON Burnett's band Four In A Bar will play the first night of jazz on Thursday at the Eagle And Child, in High Petergate, York, and by coincidence this was the first premises in York where Ron performed in 1958.
"I lived in Hull at the time, but often came over to York to play at this venue, then known as Pete Madden's bar, with my Unity Jazz Band, who were all studying at Hull Art College," says Ron, former jazz columnist for The Press. "The photograph is very 1950s/60s, given the popularity of waistcoat jazz, such as Acker Bilk."
Ron is pictured on the right. Standing in the doorway, second left, is pianist Ted Lewis, who wrote Jack's Return Home, later filmed as Get Carter with Michael Caine in 1971. Ted also worked as an animator on the Beatles' 1968 film Yellow Submarine.
