INNOVATIVE South Yorkshire choral group Albion will take exquisite British music into Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, in their York debut on November 21.

Winners of the Best Vocal Performance prize at this year’s Buxton Fringe, they will offer two chances to see them in such glorious church surroundings, where they will inhabit the whole building, allowing the audience to experience music in all aspects at 4pm and 6pm.

Albion was formed four years ago in Sheffield by a group of students who "wanted to do something different". Now, the Yorkshire singers have recorded two albums, with a third to be released in December, as well as being heard on BBC Radio 3 and touring nationally, playing the English Music Festival in both Oxford and Middleham.

As alto Philippa Wilson says: “We're known for exactly what we aimed at in the beginning: doing something that we love, giving a new angle on such familiar music, and above all being connected to the people we sing for.”

All of the music is new, composed or arranged by Albion within the past four years, but it draws on the ancient musical traditions of “these islands”, Britain and Ireland. Shining arrangements of Jerusalem and The Skye Boat Song sit alongside new settings of He Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven and A Gaelic Blessing.

From day one, Albion was conceived as different from the average choir. Working without sheet music or conductor, the singers move freely throughout a space, liberating music from the concert hall and bringing it into the world.

"Everything about an Albion performance is natural and uninhibited: we find joy in sharing musical experiences," says Philippa. "Singers and audience are brought together by the music, making for an intimate and moving experience for all."
