WEST Yorkshire festival favourites Marmozets are graduating to the main stage on their third appearance at the Leeds Festival next weekend.

The Bingley alternative rock quintet of Becca, Sam and Josh Macintyre and Jack and Will Bottomley will be performing at Bramham Park, near Wetherby, on August 30, the closing day of the three-day event.

"We played Leeds Festival for the first time in 2010, when we were on the Introducing stage," recalls Jack, whose band formed in 2007. "We'd been a couple of times as fans, and it was great to finally perform there.

"We played two sets last year, one on the Lock Up stage – that's the rock tent – and the NME tent about an hour later. It was kind of stressful moving things across, but I think we were the only band that day to do that, and there were a few people who managed to see both sets.

"This time we'll be playing the main stage, the same day as Metallica are, which feels pretty surreal."

The British festival experience is always a challenge, particularly as summer draws to a close. "I think you have to prepare for the worst! Anything can go wrong! Rain!," says Jack. "You get only a short time for a soundcheck, whereas you turn up six hours before a show when you're on tour.

"Though when we were on tour in America with a band called The Used for two months earlier this year, we would take only seven minutes to set the stage up."

Touring America as part of a line-up of four bands was an eye-opener. "I picked up that it's a lot easier to tour anywhere else in the world. You're driving for an incredible amount of hours, have a burger, play the show, and that's it for the day," says Jack. "It makes you realise how big the world is."

Marmozets managed to "squeeze in" some studio time while in the United States. "We recorded a track in Los Angeles that could be the next single. The record label sorted out the recording session with a guy called Joe Baressi, who'd worked with The Melvins. He was great to record with and it was this crazy, amazing experience."

Over the summer, Marmozets have played a free show at the Montreux Jazz Festival – aptly in The Rock Cave – and performed their first ever Russian show at the 16 Tons Club in Moscow, along with a support slot to Kasabian at Stadium Live in the same city. The Riot Fest in Chicago beckons in September, as does an autumn tour of America with Nothing More and the Rock Allegiance Festival in October.

Buoyed by winning Best Album at the 2015 Kerrang Awards in early June, when might Marmozets record the follow-up to The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets? "We want to do both an autumn tour and some recording this year. We'd love to be back in the studio by the end of the year as we're pretty keen to get another album out as soon as we can."
