THE York Late Music concert series presents the Late Music Ensemble in A Terry Riley Celebration tomorrow at the St Saviourgate Unitarian Chapel in York.

James Whittle will be the conductor for the 7.30pm programme of Terry Riley's seminal minimalist classic, In C; John Luther Adams's The Light Within; a selection of John’s Book of Alleged Dances by John Adams; Pauline Oliveros's Sonic Meditation I: Teach Yourself To Fly and three world premieres.

Two of them are Late Music commissions, Ben Gaunt's Carina’s Observatory and Emily Crossland's 1v4(v) (CORRECT), and the third is Whittle's arrangement of Frederic Rzewski's Steptangle For Stamping Ensemble.

"Our programme marks Terry Riley's 80th birthday by exploring his musical influences through rhythm and humour, improvisation and the cosmos, and even some audience participation," says Whittle.

The composers Emily Crossland and Ben Gaunt will be in conversation with Whittle in a pre-concert talk at 6.45pm, when concert-goers can enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. Tickets are on sale at latemusic.org and on the door.
