WELSH singer-songwriter Judith Owen will have a band with history backing her at the Fulford Arms, York, on Saturday night.
Drummer Russ Kunkel, bassist Leland Sklar and guitarist Waddy Wachtel each played on many of the landmark Seventies’ albums of the Laurel Canyon era, not least Carole King’s Tapestry, James Taylor’s Sweet Baby James, and Joni Mitchell’s Blue.
“The 1970s troubadour music of Laurel Canyon was absolutely beautiful. Their recordings were so magnificent” says Judith. “They were profoundly influential on my style and who I became as a singer songwriter.
“I grew up listening to Russ, Leland and Waddy on James Taylor and Carole King’s records. It’s the full circle: London to Laurel Canyon and back again.
“It’s a rare experience seeing these legendary guys together, and I’m the lucky woman who gets to sit in the ‘Carole King’ seat with them.”
Judith will be showcasing songs of love and loss, pain and joy from her eighth album, last April’s Ebb & Flow.
“This record feels like a homecoming,” she says. “It’s the sound I heard as a kid and which made me light up. I’ve brought it home and it feels nice to be here.”
Tickets are on sale at £14 on 0871 297 0777 at seetickets.com/event/judith-owen/fibbers/ and on the door from 7.30pm.
