THE Jesus And Mary Chain are playing the Leeds O2 Academy on Tuesday as part of the reformed Scottish band’s extended tour to mark the 30th anniversary of their incendiary, ground-breaking debut album, Psychocandy.

Last November, Jim and William Reid performed the first of their Psychocandy shows at the London Troxy. Further dates sold out too, leading to the addition of ten more at the outset of a year when the East Kilbride brothers will be looking to the future too apparently.

As the Reids crank up the trademark guitar feedback once more, Jim says: “Psychocandy was meant to be a kick in the teeth to all of those who stood in our way at the time, which was practically the whole music industry. In 1985 there were a great many people who predicted no more than a six-month life span for the Mary Chain.”

Vocalist Jim is now 53 and living in Devon with his wife Julie and daughters Simone, 11, and Candice, seven. Guitarist William, 56, lives in the US. However, let’s rejoice that the once-broken Chain has linked again for another taste of Psychocandy.
