AMERICAN singer-songwriter Dawn Landes will open her five-date January tour of Britain and Ireland in York.

Tuesday night’s gig at Fibbers, in Toft Green, will be the first chance to hear songs from next month’s Covers EP, whose track listing will be led off by Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City, performed as a duet by Dawn with JimJames of My Morning Jacket.

Other songs on this February 2 release will be her takes on Tom Petty’s Southern Accents, Dolly Parton’s Longer Than Always, Roxy Music’s More Than This and Henry Mancini’s Moon River, winner of an Academy Award for Best Original Song for its first performance by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

Dawn’s version of Atlantic City is now streaming via Souncloud and she also has unveiled her video for More Than This, wherein she plays a series of characters in a spoof of the karaoke scene in the movie Lost In Translation, as can be viewed on YouTube.

Dawn’s transformative skill with covers caught fire with her 2007 bluegrass rendition of Peter Bjorn And John’s whistling hit Young Folks and she has a French EP to her name too, Mal Habillee.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, 34 years ago, Dawn has lived in Brooklyn, New York, since her university days in the Big Apple. Last year, she released the album Bluebird, written after her divorce from Idaho singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, to whom she was married from 2009 to 2011. Ritter addressed the marital breakdown on his 2013 album, The Beast In Its Tracks, but rather than taking the chance to get things off her chest in response, Dawn chose to write a record that points more towards hope than heartache.

Her 2015 tour will take in dates in York, Liverpool, Dublin and Newcastle, before finishing in Glasgow on January 18 as part of Celtic Connections festival.

Dawn Landes, Fibbers, York, Tuesday, 7.30pm Tickets cost £10 online at fibbers.co.uk or on the door.
