AUSTRALIAN folk-punk troubadour Benny Mayhem will return to Yorkshire on Sunday to play The Old Ebor, Drake Street, Nunnery Lane, York, where he will perform a combination of original material and cover versions.
Influenced by English and American rock and Irish folk music, Mayhem reflects his punk rock roots by favouring a brand of fast, energetic folk music that resonates strongest with rock’n’roll fans.
“I feel a kindred spirit with Irish and colonial Australian folk,” he says. "My music steers away from the sullen introspection of contemporary singer-songwriters and is more aimed at getting people on their feet and singing.”
His first single, Mindless Greg The Media Consumer, typifies his love of thought-provoking lyrics allied to catchy rhythms, while his status as a traveller and troubadour is a time-honoured musical tradition.
Admission for Sunday's show will be free from 7.30pm.
