TOM Odell, the voice of John Lewis's Christmas penguin advertising campaign, will take to the North Yorkshire outdoors next summer to play Dalby Forest, near Pickering, on June 25.

This will be one of seven shows that the 24-year-old Chichester singer-songwriter will perform as part of the Forestry Commission’s Forest Live season of open-air concerts in aid of woodland conservation, while also bringing Britain's forests to new audiences.

“This will be a whole new experience for me," said Tom. "I can’t wait to bring my live show to the woods and I hope to see you there.”

Odell released his debut album, Long Way Down, in June 2013 when it shot straight to number one: news that he heard while performing on the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury.

The singles Can’t Pretend, Hold Me and Another Love affirmed a song-writing maturity beyond his years, leading to his winning the Songwriter of the Year prize at the 2014 Ivor Novello Awards, having won the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award in early 2013, an award that amounts to a prediction of imminent success.

This year, Long Way Down has been certified gold and Odell has played the summer festival circuit, including V Festival and Isle of Wight, and supported his idol, Neil Young, at HydePark. Then came his selection to perform the soundtrack to this winter's John Lewis Christmas advert, a cover of John Lennon’s Real Love that has generated millions of YouTube views with its film of Monty the CGI penguin.

Odell is now in the studio recording his new album in readiness for next summer's concerts. Dalby tickets go on sale at £34.50 on Friday at 9am on 03000 680400 or at forestry.gov.uk/music

Odell is the second act to be confirmed for Dalby Forest next summer, when Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott will play there on June 27.
