THE University of York Choir will sing Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Brahms’s Zigeunerlieder at Central Hall, University of York, on November 25.

The soloists at the 7.30pm concert will be soprano Catrin Woodruff, mezzo soprano Anna Harvey, tenor Jason Darnell and bass Johnny Herford, along with students Ryan O’Sullivan and Ben Horden, pianos, and Tom Dewey, harmonium. The conductor will be Peter Seymour.

Rossini said of his work: “Dear God, here it is, finished a poor little Mass. Is it sacred music that I have written or damned music?”. Peter Seymour’s response is to say: “The Petite Messe was Rossini’s attempt to leave the world with a serious work but, with its flamboyant arias and dramatic choruses, the Mass never quite escapes the composer’s Italian operatic style.”

Brahms set Hungarian folk song lyrics for his Zigeunerlieder gipsy songs. “The passion and drama of his music reflect the joy and pain of love described in the original tales, making this a popular piece from its 1888 premiere onwards,” says Peter.

Tickets cost £10 to £20, concessions £8 to £18 and students £3; under 16s will be admitted for free if accompanied by an adult ticket holder. Box office: 01904 322439, at yorkconcerts.co.uk or by email sent to boxoffice@york.ac.uk
