FOLK big band Bellowhead head to York Barbican tonight as part of a 22-date November tour.

This 11-piece line-up play a blistering fusion of folk, funk, rock, world, jazz, music hall and classical music, placing themselves at the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene while harnessing the power and mystery of English and European musical traditions.

This year marks their tenth anniversary, a landmark marked by their album Revival, which entered the charts at number 12 this summer, giving Bellowhead their highest position in a year when they also sold out the Royal Albert Hall and issued the Bellowhead Songbook through Faber.

Bellowhead, whose line-up includes John Spiers and Jon Boden, released a double A-side single ahead of the tour, combining Let Her Run with I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight, accompanied by a home-made video for Let Her Run. Let Her Run is a raucous song from Revival album, with its driving rhythms and upbeat horns and is a reworked adaptation from the hauling shanty Let The Bulgine Run. I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight is a cover of the Richard and Linda Thompson classic, first released on the Island label in 1974.

Meanwhile, Bellowhead have teamed up with Sussex brewery Harveys to produce a Revival Ale. The band have been involved directly in the brewing process, which took place in mid-October, with the possibility of nationwide distribution to follow its Sussex release.

Now a popular pastime among bands, this is Bellowhead’s second foray into beer-making, the first being with the Potbelly Brewery and their Hedonism Ale to accompany their album of the same name.
