THE National Centre for Early Music in York (NCEM) is one of eight major organisations from across the European Community involved in a successful bid to the 2014 Creative Europe Culture Programme.

Led by Ambronay Festival, in France, the EEEmerging  European Ensembles project has been awarded a grant of 1,971,375 Euros.

The funding, to be shared among the partners over four years, will enable the NCEM to enhance its backing of young emerging early music ensembles by hosting six residencies in York between 2015 and 2018, supporting the York Early Music International Young Artists Competition. This biennial event draws in competitors from across the European Community and further afield and provides performance opportunities throughout Britain.

NCEM director Delma Tomlin says: “As a result of this enlightened partnership with our colleagues across Europe, we're delighted that the highly acclaimed International Young Artists Competition – held as part of the York Early Music Festival – will be one of the main ways of discovering new ensembles. Our co-organisers will attend the competition and will offer one or two selected ensembles the opportunity to proceed directly to the first year of the EEEmerging project.

“There's a startling lack of provision for young ensembles to spend time together honing the important skills of ensemble playing, far less any formal support in terms of organising and marketing their work.

Through the EEEmerging project, we will provide a series of fully supported ’packages’, comprising training in social media, marketing and outreach work, while offering essential rehearsal time to give the musicians an opportunity to work on repertory.”

The ensembles will receive support over a one to three-year period. Ensembles interested in applying can find out more through the International Young Artists Competition section of the website at ncem.co.uk/youngartists2015

The deadline for applications for the next International Young Artists Competition is January 23 2015. Applications should be sent to: The Music Administrator, National Centre for Early Music, St Margaret’s Church, Walmgate, York YO1 9TL or by email to education@ncem.co.uk
