ALL the University of York's first-year music students are participating in this autumn's practical project, a production of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera at the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall from Wednesday until Friday.

Brecht and Weill's most frequently performed satirical collaboration was written in 1928 and set in London and it raises issues that are as relevant today as they were in the Twenties: Injustice, class, beggary, corruption and scandal.

The story revolves around Macheath marrying Polly Peachum to the displeasure of her father, who consequently tries to have Macheath hanged, but can Polly or any of Macheath's previous lovers save him from death?

The practical project is the only opportunity to see every first-year music student create a performance together, all of them singing, acting, dancing, playing and displaying their broad abilities.

The 150-minute show is directed and produced by second and third year students, and tickets for the 7.30pm performances can be booked on 01904 322439 or at boxoffice@york.ac.uk
