DEVON Sproule makes a long overdue return to York on Tuesday on a brief tour that follows her first visit to Australia and a few shows in California.

"It's fair to say, Devon is pretty well travelled," says promoter Joe Coates. " Releasing her first record at the age of 16 gave her a head start on most, and by 24 she was performing live on Later... With Jools Holland, filling vast concert halls and touring worldwide."

During the past five years, Devon has teamed up with Coventry record label and arts centre operator Tin Angel. Free from music industry pressures or confines, she has been prolific, releasing three albums and a live record, including last year's Colours, a collaboration with Canadian singer-songwriter Mike O'Neill.

"The bar has always remained high," says Joe. "Her sweet, soulful vocals are always to the fore, with folk, swing and jazz backing from her guitar and her imperious band, and an ever impressive catalogue of songs will continue to enthral generations to come."

Please Please You presents Devon Sproule, The Basement, City Screen, York, Tuesday, 8pm. Tickets cost £10 in advance on 0871 902 5726 or at thebasementyork.co.uk or £12 on the door.
