THE Wave Pictures are playing shows in support of their tour-only CD, The Wave Pictures Play Artistic Vice By Daniel Johnston, an album they recorded in one June day at Big Jelly Studios in Ramsgate, covering Johnson’s record from beginning to end.

“This is not the first time The Wave Pictures have worked on Daniel Johnston material,” says Please Please You promoter Joe Coates, who brings the band to The Basement, City Screen, York, on Wednesday at 8pm.

“In 2009 they acted as his backing band on a full UK tour, during which time they played songs from throughout his career.

“More recently, in 2013, they were invited, along with several other artists, to play two songs at a tribute night at which Daniel Johnston headlined himself.

“As a member of the Jeffrey Lewis and Peter Stampfel band, Franic Rozycki of The Wave Pictures also played mandolin in the backing band for Daniel Johnston that night, and the songs The Wave Pictures chose to cover were both taken from the Artistic Vice album.”

In 2014, when The Wave Pictures were asked to cover an album by an artist they admired, and to tour that album in Spain, they picked Artistic Vice. Looking ahead, they are now working on a new album for release next year.
