IN her first visit to York, Korean violinist So Ock Kim will be the soloist for Mendelssohn's "brilliant, fizzing" Violin Concerto in the opening concert of York Guildhall Orchestra's 2014-2015 season at York Barbican.

This season, the orchestra will be continuing its exploration of the large-scale symphonic works of Sibelius with works in both halves.

In the first, The Swan Of Tuonela, one of four tone poems that make a longer suite, will use a Cor Anglais, essentially a large oboe, to represent the swan in what is considered to be one of the most beautiful solos written for that instrument. In the second, the orchestra will perform Sibelius's Symphony 2.

The 7.30pm programme will begin with Mendelssohn's bouncing, fairy-like Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tickets cost £15 to £22 on 0844 854 2757 or at yorkbarbican.co.uk
