DIRTY Three guitarist Mick Turner is touring in a duo with The Drones' drummer, Mike Noga, performing in the City Screen Basement bar in York on Monday night.

Turner has played guitar in Cat Power and Bonnie "Prince" Billy's bands as well as launching a solo career in 1997 with Tren Phantasma, a collection of improvised four-track recordings that used his trademark contemplative playing style.

The following year, Turner and bandmate Jim White toured as the Tren Brothers, adding an arsenal of loop pedals and understated percussion. Several of these dates were opening spots for Cat Power, with whom the duo collaborated on the 1998 album Moon Pix.

Last year, a compilation of Turner's earliest recordings with White in the band Venom P. Stinger was released by Drag City, followed by a brief reunion tour and the November arrival of his latest solo album, Don't Tell The Driver, recorded intermittently between 2009 and 2012 at Big Moth studios in Australia.

On Monday, Mike Noga will open the 8pm show in addition to performing with Turner. As well as drumming for Aussie desert-rockers The Drones, he has made two acoustic solo records.

"The second of them, The Balladeer Hunter, was recorded by Burke Reid, who's since done the same for the latest albums from Courtney Barnett and DZ Deathrays," says Joe Coates, who is bringing the Turner and Noga duo to York under his Please Please You banner.

Aussie band DZ Deathrays, by the way, are playing The Woolpack in York tonight, again at Joe's invitation. Avalanche Party and ...And The Hangnails are on the 8pm bill too and admission is £5.

Tickets for Turner and Noga cost £10 in advance from City Screen or £12 on the door. After York, they are touring Britain with Neutral Milk Hotel, then Kurt Vile & The Violators. Monday''s support act will be Wolf Solent.
