EMILY Maguire once spent four years living in a recycled wood and tin shack in the Australian bush, and it was there that the London-born songwriter made her first two albums, Stranger Place and Keep Walking.
She attracted the attention of BBC2 with her thought-provoking lyrics and expressive vocals before touring extensively with fellow songwriters Don McLean, Eric Bibb, Paul Brady, Dennis Locorriere and Roddy Frame on her return to Britain.
Her third album, Believer, again made the Radio 2 playlists and her fourth, Bird Inside A Cage, was released last July. Songs from all four will feature in her set at Helmsley Arts Centre next weekend.
Emily also speaks frequently in the media on the subject of combating the stigma of mental illness. Last October, she was interviewed by Libby Purves for BBC Radio 4’s Midweek programme about her book Start Over Again and her experiences of dealing with bipolar disorder.
