JAZZ singer Jacqui Dankworth’s dozen-date autumn tour will take in the University of York on October 9 in her only Yorkshire appearance.

Jacqui, daughter of jazz royalty Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, will be promoting her new album, Live To Love, Released on September 30, it marks a change of direction from 2011’s It Happens Quietly. Out goes a tipping of hats to the past on interpretations of classic standards; in come jazz, soul and blues-infused original compositions on the theme of life and love, alongside contemporary covers of Wayne Shorter, Johnny Mercer and Donny Hathaway songs, in the year that Jacqui turned 50.

Among the new works is All Is Quiet, a stark ballad about human slavery written by Jacqui and bassist Geoff Gascoyne, featuring a guest appearance by The Brodsky Quartet. The laidback, gently affecting title track, Live To Love, was penned by her husband, pianist Charlie Wood, and Jacqui has added a quirky quantum mechanics-themed lyric to a reggae-inflected version of her late father’s tune, Tomorrow’s World.

Jacqui’s “deeply personal” Live To Love is the latest chapter in a diverse career that has incorporated collaborations with Marvin Hamlisch, Paloma Faith and Chick Corea; performing leading roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre and in West End musicals such as in Steven Sondheim’s Into The Woods; and appearing last year as Rosa in Showtime’s television series The Borgias and as a Beggar in the film musical Les Miserables.
