MADNESS have Madstock, Huddersfield has Huddstock, Fife has Fifestock and York has, er, Edstock!

Promoted by York musician Edwin Duckitt, this annual event will celebrate 50 years of The Beatles in Edstock 7 at the Fulford Arms, in Fulford Road, on Saturday, July 13 from 1pm until late.

“I’ve been involved with various bands in and around York for many years now,” says Edwin, of Bright Street, York. “Once a year I organise an absolutely free mini music festival, which like all good festivals includes music, cabaret, new talent and quality food and drink.

“As this year is the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first album recording at Abbey Road – an event that has gained an enormous amount of publicity in the media – I strongly feel that York should also celebrate The Beatles at 50.

“Especially as we have our own anniversary because The Beatles played here at the Rialto an astonishing four times back in 1963, twice as support and twice as headliners.”

To mark the golden anniversary, Edwin has enlisted York’s very own Beatles tribute act, The Pepperhearts, to headline Edstock 7.

“The all-day event will be held at the Fulford Arms, literally a stone’s throw from the original site of the Rialto, and I’d like to invite any residents who saw The Beatles to come down and share their memories,” said Edwin. “We’ll award prizes to anyone who can bring along original tickets, fanzines or programmes.”

Edwin’s own band, Herb Helpless And The Marijuana Brass – alias The Herbs – will play a set in celebration of York’s diverse musical history, including tributes to artists who performed here, among them Ian Dury and Roxy Music, whose 1972 gig in the Museum Gardens was free, just like Edstock.

“York has played host to, among others, the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, The Clash, Coldplay…the list is endless,” said Edwin.

Edstock 7 also will feature The Surf Sluts, Headway, the Record Graveyard, comedy, cabaret, magic, fancy dress, an open mic, guest beers and special Edstcok menu.
