Wine suggestions for Mother's Day
JUST because you are a mum, it doesn’t mean the only wine you like is pink fizz, cloying Californian rosé or Prosecco. Although you could be forgiven for thinking this is the case, if you take a look at the Mother’s Day section in the supermarket.
If you are planning on buying mater a bottle of vino for Mother’s Day tomorrow, take her something she will enjoy. Don’t be tempted by the ‘bargain’ Champagne that didn’t shift on Valentine’s Day.
Remember that one mum’s wine is another mum’s poison. My own mother has a sweet tooth and likes off-dry riesling best. My other half, who is also a mum, appreciates the charms of a peppery, earthy syrah. Another wine-drinking mum I know loves a glass of chardonnay above anything, apart from her children of course.
With wine-drinking mums in mind, I’ve come up with a trio of suggestions that will make a good gift.
Add flowers and chocolates for extra brownie points.
New to Sainsbury’s is its own label English Sparkling Brut 2007, from Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey. Made with the Champagne grapes, chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, it’s produced in the traditional method, or méthode champenoise as it is also called.
As you might expect this is a very Champagneesque fizz. Biscuity, with green apple, citrus, underripe peach, a lick of minerals and elegant bubbles; it is classy stuff.
Made with fruit from the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand, Villa Maria Private Bin Syrah 2009 is a red, very much in the Rhône style. Medium-bodied but powerful, it shows blackberry and raspberry fruit, with black pepper, clove and some floral notes too.
Or if mum is a rosé fan, try a Provençal pink such as Mirabeau Rosé 2010, made by a Brit, Stephen Cronk. Dry and crisp, it shows elegance but is fullflavoured at the same time, with ripe cherries and strawberries, seasoned with fennel and lavender.
Sainsbury’s English Sparkling Brut 2007, £19.99 at Sainsbury’s 17/20
Villa Maria Private Bin Syrah 2009, £11.99 at Majestic and Nisa 18/20
Mirabeau Rosé 2010, Côtes de Provence, £8.99 at Waitrose 17/20
