Beer garden plan for York Tap pub

A REAL-ALE pub is to open a beer garden to liven up part of York Railway Station.

The York Tap opened in November in the northern part of the station which was in decline, said Jamie Hawksworth, director of Pivovar, the pub company which invested £250,000 into the refurbishment of the former tearooms.

He said: “Part of the deal was to make sure the outside was as important as the inside. We have been really keen that we get it right.

“When anyone comes in off any southbound trains from the north that building is the first thing that they will see.”

The beer garden, located at the pub’s entrance on platform three, has been designed by David Turner, a 22-year-old graduate of York St John University who owns Scruffy Dog Design, and who works in the pub as a barman.

Good service in pleasant surroundings. A monitor displaying train times would be useful. 'Bernard' Lager isn' t to everyones taste. At least one recognisable brand to compliment the 'real ale' beers would surely improve sales and throughput.

Peter. I am with you all the way regarding the monitor, but it is a well known fact, that only Ladies, and "Southern Softies" drink lager. York Tap is located on York Station, not Kings Cross.

Ok for a quick one before catching a train. Apart from that, wouldnt want to stay long as not very cosy with the uncomfortable chairs. That said I'm glad it's there and good luck for the future.

You want to get out more. The 'Bernard' beer I referred to IS a Lager!

It's not a bad place but check the prices first. It cost me over 7 quid for a bottle of beer!

Would checking the price before you bought the product help you ???

That's what I mean. Why have more lager in York Tap. You want to read my post properly, and don't be so touchy.

The York Tap is a lovely real ale house. A beer garden to view the taxis, bewildered tourists pulling wheeled cases and pork wagons is to be applauded even if it only gives the socially unacceptable and societal castaway smokers somewhere to sit down and inhale their weed.

The only request I have of the York Tap is please do your best and make the toilets not smell like a ripe hamster cage.

It would actually Smudge, I liked the looks of the bottle and asked for it. The barman pulled the cap off then told me the price. I was too stunned/embarrassed to tell him where to stick it! I later learned it was a speciality beer but a price list might have warned me.

What was it called and was it nice?

Brilliantr, another place to be overrun with loud drunken geordies. Also it's illegal to park bicycles outside as some of my friends found out. Got removed by the BTP and almost got blown up becuase of terrorism risks.

It's also illegal to smoke anywhere on York Station, including the platforms - so presumably this would include the beer garden, would it not?

Pivovar's "thing" has always been for speciality beers, and the company's actually the UK importer for Bernard, so I wouldn't expect to see it going anywhere - nor their bars sullied with a Carling pump. There's always Cooper's next door if you fancy a pint of something you could get anywhere.

Coopers is a dump, that' s why I tried next door. All I suggested was that a broader range of products may attract additional custom. Real ale is all well and good but not to everyone' s taste. I' d like to see the new bar succeed but I won't be visiting again until the range of products is extended.

How much bloody broader do you want the range? 20 real ales and a choice of continental and British keg products, supplemented by a wide range of bottled beers from across the globe not enough for you? Get to Cooper's for Carling.

I wish 'the people' did want such inferior ale then the Tap wouldn't be 3 deep at the bar of discerning drinkers trying to order a pint of the mostly British ales they sell.

It would be nice if The Press gave reasons. Faceless Press.

I think that York Tap will just about survive without your custom. They will lose far more customers by going down to mass-produced effluent route rather than sticking to smaller artisan producers of high quality products.

Given that every time I've been in the Tap it's been packed out then God forbid they change what they're doing to try and get more people in there.

Maybe if Coopers started serving something drinkable, then The Tap will have to buck up their idea's and serve the generic dross you're referring to.

Looks like you found some of those cyclists you keep claiming don't exist - and it turns out they are your friends too!
