YORK council leader James Alexander will work a shift at the Fulford Arms pub on Wednesday night to learn more about the trade.
He will be put through his paces by landlord Steve Bradley, who took over the pub ten months ago.
Coun Alexander said: “Many landlords say to me it doesn’t feel like a level playing field when the supermarkets are stacking alcohol high and selling it low, and I personally believe duty should be increased for supermarkets to offset a lower duty on lower strength pub pints”.
Mr Bradley said: “It’s important that politicians understand what businesses do and what sorts of challenges they are faced with. Business rates are a real problem and for all the Government’s talk of growing the private sector, there is much more it could be doing to support businesses like mine”.

Successive governments (and Labour were as much culprits as the present incumbents) see £14 billion Excise Duty as an easy touch and mistakenly justify it as part of the fight against binge drinking and alcoholism. Given people will forgo other things to afford alcohol - it is patently not working.
I read recently that Black Sheep pay almost half of thier turnover in Duty - that's madness and a disincentive to business.
One thought to throw the cat amongst the pigeons - with microbreweries paying a fraction of the Duty of their bigger counterparts - can they not afford to pass on some of the savings to the publican...?
