PUB-GOERS in York can have high hops as well as high hopes for the new year – thanks to a record-breaking Yorkshire beer.
The Great Yorkshire Brewery at Cropton has produced Top of The Hops using 2,012 different varieties of hop.
Pictured here is Andy McCarthy, manager at The Old White Swan in Goodramgate, where the beer will be on sale tonight.
It is billed as an unofficial world-record beer, as the Guinness Book of Records team did not feel it interesting enough to merit inclusion in the book.
The idea for the beer was developed through discussions between the brewery, Nicholson’s pub company and hop scientist Peter Darby.
Many of the hop varieties used in the beer would otherwise have been destroyed.
As well as the Old White Swan, the beer will also be available in the coming weeks at the other Nicholson’s pubs in York – Harkers in St Helen’s Square, The Cross Keys in Goodramgate and The Punch Bowl in Stonegate.
