Haxby village has a new café to join the established venues. This one combines a cake shop and take-away service with a compact café area.
Table menus are supplemented by the specials board. Carrot and coriander soup with a small roll (£3) could be a starter. To follow, there was scampi with chips and peas, shepherd’s pie or fish cakes.
It was lunchtime, so poached or scrambled eggs on toast (£3.50) or an omelette were possibly on the light side. So, too, would have been a scone (£1.35) or toasted tealoaf (£1.55).
Ann selected the lemon and parsley fishcakes from the specials menu. This would come with chips and either peas or beans. Ann requested peas but no chips. When the food arrived, it had a delicate salad garnish. All in all, a satisfied customer, although it transpired there should have been two fishcakes. As there was only one left Ann’s selection would be half price!
My Clark’s brunch, according to the menu, consisted of sausage, egg, chips, baked beans and buttered bread (£4.80). It arrived with bacon as well looking remarkably like the breakfast special. The portion of chips was generous and I was extremely satisfied.
Ann insisted on trying something from the bakery and chose the date and coconut slice (80p). I was persuaded to have a bite and agreed it was delicious.
We enjoyed a pot of tea which initially was far too strong but a pleasant and helpful assistant willingly topped the pot up with water providing a drink more to our liking.
There was a steady flow of customers into the bakery which was shielded from our table. Toilet facilities are easily accessible.
