ANOTHER recently opened venue with a specialised menu. On entry, food suitable for vegans, vegetarians and gluten free is displayed for take-away customers.

There is a small walled garden and an upstairs section. We chose to sit at ground-floor level to observe activity.

We seemed to be the only people eating. The other customers appeared only to be drinking tea and coffee.

The day’s fare is shown on printed menus and the specials’ board.

Sweet potato and basil soup (£3.95) was advertised as suitable for vegan and gluten-free diets.

Other choices included bagel with cream cheese (£2.75) and stuffed Portobello mushrooms (£6.95). The spicy lentil and vegetable plait at £6.75 sounded intriguing. We ordered tea for two (£3.50). Coffee was priced from £1.60 to £1.95.

Ann decided on the quiche. This turned out to be an individual item of peppers and feta cheese, garnished with grated carrot, sundried tomato and a small bowl of spicy tomato purée. For £5.25 she was well pleased.

Seeking something sweet, I requested organic apple strudel with cinnamon, lemon and elderflower ice-cream (£4.95). There was no elderflower ice-cream left, but the alternative summer fruit version was most acceptable to Ann as well. As for the strudel, it is a long time since I tasted one so good.

We concluded our snack by sharing a slice of gluten-free cake (£1.95) which, while tasty, was a little dry.
