SHOPPERS were taking the opportunity to visit the city centre during a lull in the bad weather. As a result, this venue was busy.

The Arboretum, Thorp Perrow, near Bedale

12:40pm Saturday 6th November 2010

WE COULDN’T have timed it better. Not only was the weather exceptional, it was Hallowe’en. The autumn colours were at their best and there was an exciting trail of ghoulish things to keep children interested. There were also falcons being flown and a mammal centre. Dogs are permitted and we spotted a couple of waste bins.

BHS, Monks Cross, York

1:12pm Saturday 30th October 2010

IT IS NOT often that we go shopping on a Sunday. The car park at Monks Cross suggested that the whole of York was also there, but with so many retail outlets our fear that we would not get near a café was ill founded.

The Whole Hog Farm Shop and Tearoom

Lavender Tearooms, Market Square, Knaresborough

11:22am Saturday 18th September 2010

WEDNESDAY is market day. Hidden behind a line of stalls is ‘Ye oldest chymist shoppe in England’, which no longer dispenses medicine but does offer a fascinating range of ancient remedies and sweets from days of yore.

Terrace Café, Sledmere House, Sledmere, near Driffield

Set on the edge of extensive parkland, this self-service café can be accessed without paying an admission charge to the house and grounds.

Swallows Nest Restaurant, Crockey Hill, York

6:08am Saturday 4th September 2010

DOES it pay to advertise? If it didn’t this revue would not have been written.

La Vecchia Scuola, Low Petergate, York

1:19pm Saturday 28th August 2010

ATTRACTED by a flier handed out in the street, we decided to sample the £5.95 one-course meal. But be warned. We did not look at the menu displayed at the entrance, making straight for a table in the conservatory.
