DIRECTOR Elizabeth Mitchell will introduce her new psychological drama, Island (15), at City Screen, York, on Tuesday evening, when she will take questions from the floor after the 6pm screening.

Based on a novel by Jane Rogers, this haunting tale of retribution and redemption follows the path of Nikki Black (played by My Summer Of Love star Natalie Press), who was abandoned at birth and spent most of her life in care, sustained only by fairy tales.

Incapable of love, fearful and desperate for revenge, Nikki decides to find her birth mother (York actress Janet McTeer), then confront her...and kill her.

She traces her mother to a remote Scottish island – Island was filmed on the Isle of Mull – where she embarks on her journey of revenge, but on arrival she discovers she has a brother (Colin Morgan).

Weeks pass and Nikki gradually awakens to the magic of the island, her beguiling brother and their shared passion for storytelling, but all the while her murderous paranoia intensifies.

The film was co-directed by Mitchell and Brek Taylor, who combined their diverse experience in film development and theatre to write the screenplay for their debut feature.
