Cinema to screen first 3D documentary

CITY Screen, York, is showing the first documentary film to be made in 3D, Werner Herzog’s Cave Of Forgotten Dreams (U).

For his follow-up to Encounters At The End Of The World, the German director gained unprecedented access through the tightest of restrictions to capture on film the interior of the Chauvet Cave in southern France with specially- designed 3D cameras.

The world’s oldest cave paintings were discovered there in 1994, and Herzog’s cameras reveal a breathtaking subterranean world leading to the 32,000-year-old artworks.

Herzog’s film received investment from Picturehouse Entertainment and is being shown solely at Picturehouse cinemas such as City Screen, York.

“It’s an important and exclusive release for Picturehouse,” says City Screen marketing manager Dave Taylor.

“The way in which the prehistoric artists followed the contours of the caves in their artwork makes Herzog’s use of 3D technology really meaningful.”

Cave Of Forgotten Dreams can be seen at 1.20pm, 3.40pm, 6pm and 8.20pm until Thursday and at 12.20pm, 2.40pm, 5pm and 7.20pm on Sunday. The film will be retained for a second week with new screen times to run from next Friday.
