Film news round-up

The second Silver Screen Week of nostalgic film shows at Fairfax House, Castlegate, York, opens on Sunday with a gala screening of Casablanca at 7.30pm.

Please note, Sunday’s 11am show, Fantasia, has been cancelled. See our website, yorkpress.co.uk/silverscreen, for a full preview of the week of shows at the former St George’s Cinema.

In next Friday’s York Twenty4Seven, Charles Hutchinson interviews pianist Kieran White, who will provide the live musical score for the October 3 screening of Buster Keaton’s 1927 silent movie, The General. This will be the only show at City Screen, York, rather than Fairfax House.

For tickets, phone 01904 655543, except for The General (0871 902 5726).

• Siouxsie & The Banshees’ bassist and founder, Steven Severin, will perform his own score to Jean Cocteau’s silent avant-garde film Blood Of A Poet (PG) live at City Screen, York, on October 7 at 7pm.

Dave Taylor, City Screen’s marketing manager, anticipates a memorable evening.

“Cocteau’s debut film of 1930 is ground-breaking – contemporary with the Surrealist oeuvre of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali, and we’re exceptionally pleased to welcome Steven Severin to play accompaniment to the film at City Screen,” he says.

“His score presents an avant-garde musical event steeped in the darkness and light of Cocteau’s seductively surreal images.”

For tickets, phone 0871 902 5726 or book online at picturehouses.co.uk

• PROVOCATIVE French director Catherine Breillat is in the Tuesday Special spotlight at City Screen, York.

Dominique Thomas and Lola Giovannetti star in her screen adaptation of the macabre French folktale of Bluebeard (15), the favourite story of good little girls in the 1950s.

Among those girls is Catherine, who loves to frighten her older sister, Marie-Anne, by reading it to her until she starts to cry. Catherine goes one step further by putting herself in the story, becoming Princess Marie-Catherine, Bluebeard’s last wife, the one who escapes.

For tickets for Tuesday’s 6.15pm screening, phone 0871 902 5726.
