THIS weekend’s Sunday Special at City Screen, York, is London River (12A), selected as the Staff Choice Movie by front-of-house assistant Ash Mitchell.
Set in the wake of the London bombings of July 2005, Rachid Bouchareb’s poignant story depicts two strangers who find comfort amid the uncertainty and fear in the capital at that time.
Brenda Blethyn plays a Christian woman, Elisabeth, who journeys to London in search of a missing daughter. Meanwhile, a Muslim man (Sotigui Kouyaté) embarks on a similar trip to locate his son, whereupon Elisabeth forms an unlikely friendship that acts as a metaphor for a nation’s collective grief and defiant unity.
