CITY Screen, York, journeys back to the groovy Sixties on Tuesday (July 11) for a 6.35pm showing of DA Pennebaker's concert film Monterey Pop (U), filmed at the height of the Summer of Love.

On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, the first and only Monterey International Pop Festival distilled the essence of a decade's spirit, ushering in a new era with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding hitting the stratospheric heights. They were but a few among a wildly diverse cast that took in Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas And the Papas, The Who, The Byrds, Hugh Masekela and Ravi Shankar.

Employing his characteristic cinema verité style, Pennebaker captured it all in 79 minutes, immortalising moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend destroying his guitar; Jimi Hendrix burning his.

Tickets for this Discover Tuesdays screening are on sale at picturehouses.com/cinema/York and on 0871 902 5726.
