THE programme is in place for May's series of Discover Tuesdays screenings of cult classics, arthouse gems and documentaries at City Screen, York.

Ticket prices have been reduced with effect from this month for both the Discover Tuesdays and Vintage Sundays film strands at the Coney Street cinema, now priced at £8 for general admission and concessions and £5 for Picturehouse members.

On Tuesday, Pablo Larraín's Neruda will be shown at 6.10pm, with its account of poet Pablo Neruda going on the run in the 1940s after Chile’s right-wing regime outlaws Communism, pursued by a conflicted detective, played by Gael García Bernal. Larraín's refreshing and entertaining tale is noted for boldly testing the limits of filmic biography.

The documentary I Am Not Your Negro, Raoul Peck’s cinematic vision of James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, takes an unflinching look at the history of racism in the United States on May 16 at 6.30pm.

In 2007 Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Now he returns with Graduation, a dark, powerful vision of present-day Romania, in which a doctor must contradict the principles he taught his daughter to solve the situation after she is sexually assaulted before a crucial college entrance exam. The one-off screening will be on May 23 at 6pm.

Kōji Fukada’s latest film, Harmonium, follows on May 30 at 6pm. In this quietly powerful and chilling exploration of evil, guilt and retribution, a Japanese family’s banal daily routine is fatefully upset by the arrival of an old friend from the father’s past.
