THE last man to leave his footprint on the Moon, Gene Cernan, now 82, will take part in a question-and-answer session via satellite after April 11's 6.30pm screening of The Last Man On The Moon (PG) at City Screen, York.

Writer-director Mark Craig will participate too. In his documentary, he focuses on the race into space through the prism of Captain Eugene A Cernan, a veteran of several Apollo missions, who became the 12th and last astronaut to walk on the moon, tracing his daughter's initials into the lunar dust on December 13 1972 when the commander of Apollo 17.

Basing his film on Cernan’s 1999 memoir, Craig melds rare archive footage of the Apollo adventures with interviews with those who took part, such as Alan Bean, Jim Lovell and Cernan himself. Cernan is particularly philosophical about his career and space travel; NASA flight director Gene Kranz and director Of flight operations Chris Kraft reflect on the space programme, and the film bears witness to the achievements of these brave pioneers.
