WARRIORS, the documentary story of a cricket team formed by Maasai tribesmen, could be shown in York next month after City Screen film-goer Rachel McCormack started an OurScreen campaign. However, she needs your support for the midday screening on February 20 to take place.

“OurScreen is an interesting concept as it allows customers to choose a film they’d like to watch and invite other people to join them in seeing it at the cinema," says Dave Taylor, City Screen's marketing manager. “Some customers manage to raise enough interest for the film to be shown and others fall by the wayside. Occasionally, people approach us with a really interesting film, like Warriors.”

Rachel McCormack contacted the Coney Street cinema as she thought the 2015 film needed exposure to a wider audience. "While listening to Test Match Special on day four of the Second Test Match between South Africa and England, I found myself fascinated by the tea-time interview with Barney Douglas, the director of a film called Warriors," she says.

Warriors follows a group of young Maasai tribesmen who have formed a cricket team in pursuit of their unlikely dream to play at Lord's, the home of cricket. Simultaneously, it tackles the altogether more sobering subject of a campaign to end female genital mutilation among the same tribal community.

"The interview with the director inspired me to want to watch the film, and I was delighted to discover that I could schedule a screening, via OurScreen, at City Screen, my local cinema," says Rachel. "As a big cricket fan, Warriors really appeals to me, but the film is sure to appeal to anyone who just loves a good documentary. I hope there are enough people in York interested in hearing about the story of the Maasai cricketers and their community for the February 20 screening to go ahead.”

Dave explains how the OurScreen procedure works. "Some tickets have already been ordered, but for Rachel to be successful in getting the film shown, she needs to find another 27 people to order their tickets in advance via the OurScreen website. Please note, they can’t be bought at City Screen.

"If Rachel can’t generate 27 more sales, then OurScreen will cancel the film and nobody has to pay anything, so it’s risk free. Personally, I really like the look of this film, so I hope she will be successful.”
