CITY Screen, York is to show two films to mark Refugee Week, first Joshua Oppenheimer's The Look Of Silence this evening at 6pm, followed by Philippe Falardeau's The Good Lie tomorrow at 6.15pm.

Director Oppenheimer will be taking part in a question-and-answer session via satellite after the screening of his follow-up to 2014's The Act Of Killing. Returning to the bloodstained legacy of Indonesia’s 1965 genocide, The Look Of Silence (15) begins with the story of Ramli, one of thousands slaughtered during the "anti-Communist" purges.

His optician brother Adi visits former executioners to conduct eye examinations, bravely confronting the perpetrators, including Ramli’s killer, in gut-wrenching exchanges. Oppenheimer’s extraordinary film sensitively explores the repercussions of the violence, presenting powerful testimony from victims’ families and those affected.

Dave Taylor, City Screen’s marketing manager, says: “We were pleased to have Joshua Oppenheimer here in York last year; I'm still astonished that The Act Of Killing narrowly missed out in the Academy Awards. This time the director will be doing a satellite Q&A with Louis Theroux as the guest host, so the event will be a very special premiere.”

Tomorrow evening, Refugee Action York (RAY) hosts The Good Lie (12A), the true story of Sudanese “Lost Boys”: survivors of the civil war who were sent to the United States, where they were split up. The tale has now been made into a Hollywood production, starring Reese Witherspoon as a charity worker who takes up the case, and the result is a compelling, deeply moving drama.

RAY is a group of York residents that offers support and information to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants living in and around the city, providing a service for those who face problems of extreme poverty and hardship, mental health problems, and severe social exclusion from the community.

A spokesperson for the RAY trustees says: “Much of our work involves making links between refugees and asylum seekers and other residents of York. We provide a signposting service, referring families to the Citizens Advice Bureau, legal advisors and education and health services. We liaise with schools to support children and assist them to reach their full potential, and we also administer a small hardship fund.”

Tickets for each film are on sale on 0871 902 5726 or at picturehouses.co.uk/york
