A YORK cinema is getting into the spirit of a magical film currently taking the US by storm.

City Screen launching the fairy tale inspired film Into The Woods by filling the foyer with boughs of ivy and bringing the characters and atmosphere to the cinema with the help of models and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust .

Based on Stephen Sondheim’s stage musical, Into The Woods brings together the heroes of many fairy tales including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood - with Johnny Depp as the Wolf - and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Cursed by a witch, played by Meryl Streep, to remain childless, a couple played by James Corden and Emily Blunt, must venture into the forest and locate magical objects that will break her spell, encountering various fantastical characters along the way.

Dave Taylor, City Screen's marketing manager, said: "The foyer is being transformed into a wooded glen with the help of designer, Mahlah Hall, and some of the characters are being brought to life by models from Dr Sketchy's Anti-Art School so mind you don't step on a dormouse as you enter the cinema."

Into The Woods (PG) starts on Friday. Book on 0871 902 5726 or at the Coney Street Box Office, or online: www.picturehouses.co.uk/york
