CITY Screen, York, will present a Remembrance Sunday screening of Walter Summers' 1927 documentary film The Battles Of Coronel And Falkland Islands (PG) at 1.45pm.
To commemorate the centenary of the First World War, the BFI National Archive has restored one of the finest British films of the silent era, a thrilling reconstruction of two naval battles in the early stages of the conflict, which will now be accompanied by a new score by Simon Dobson, performed by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.
The Battle of Coronel, fought off the coast of Chile on November 1 1914 , was a triumph for German Admiral von Spee, and the first defeat for the British navy in 100 years. The retaliatory strike was led by Admiral Fisher, who sent two large battle cruisers, Invincible and Inflexible, to the South Atlantic to restore British supremacy.
Filmed on real battleships supplied by the Admiralty, Walter Summers' monumental documentary was shot mostly at sea near Malta, with the Isles of Scilly serving as a convincing stand-in for the Falklands. Scrupulously fair in its treatment of the enemy, this stirring film was originally released on Armistice Day as a memorial to the thousands who died.
Tickets for Sunday's screening can be booked on 0871 902 5726 or online at picturehouses.co.uk/york
