THE documentary Bicycle was screened to more than 1,000 people at its pedal-powered public world première at the Festival of Cycling at Harewood House on the evening of Le Grand Départ at the height Yorkshire’s Tour de France fever in the summer.

Now, as the majesty of Le Tour in God’s Own Country fades, Michael B Clifford’s film will be shown at City Screen, York, on Monday at 6.20pm, and afterwards the director will host a question-and-answer session.

Bicycle is the brainchild of BAFTA-winning director Clifford and producer Pip Piper, both keen cyclists, who ask the question why is cycling and the bicycle fashionable again? The film tells the story of cycling in the land that invented the modern bicycle, its birth, decline and re-birth from Victorian origins to today.

Clifford weaves bicycle design, sport and transport through the re-telling of some iconic stories and includes interviews with notable contributors including Sir Dave Brailsford, Gary Fisher, Chris Boardman, Ned Boulting, Dannielle Khan , Sir Chris Hoy, Tracy Moseley and Mike Burrows.

Bicycle is a humorous, lyrical and warm reflection on the bicycle and cycling and its place in the British national psyche. “”At a time when the bicycle is back in fashion, it is great to see a film about this beautiful machine coming out,” says Chris Boardman, Olympic gold medallist.
